‘Science is an attempt to understand nature’. It has been 15yrs since I heard this definition for science from my beloved Physics lecturer, Mr. M Nandakumar. I may not remember everything that I learned as a science student but this definition made me look at science in a very different perceptive. It took me closer to science subjects and encouraged me to look around to find science.
I must also thank another senior physics lecturer of mine Late Mr. Anandathirta who gave us free hand in the physics laboratory to use the types of equipment and do as many trials that we wanted to and master the experiments. This encouragement by the lecturer made me understand that physics or any science subject for that matter can be learned well by experimenting more and more.
My biggest learning with respect to science has been 1. Science is around us 2. Best way to learn science is by experimenting.
It was amazing to know that MICA PU college mentor Ms. Ponnamma MN also shared the same views that of my physics lectures and was of the opinion that at Science department of MICA PU Science should be read, felt, experimented and experienced.
When I discussed this with my biology lecturer Mr. G Krishna he gave me the idea of a lab that will have all species of plants that are studied by PUC science students in the syllabus. This idea was well accepted by the management of MICA College and was quick to act upon the suggestion and here I am writing about the ‘Bio Sciences lab’ with all pride.
Bio Sciences lab is a 1500sq ft. an area dedicated to the species of botany. The lab also has a 6ft deep pond to house aquatic plants and animals. The idea behind this lab is to facilitate the biology students to physically see each and every species they study in the syllabus and if required can also dissect and have a microscopic view of different parts of the species.
The lab at this moment is in its infancy. With time the number of species will be increased and will be made available to the students from the academic year 2019 – 20. MICA extends a warm welcome to all the science enthusiasts to pay a visit to the college to know more about the Bio Sciences lab. The college is also thinking of setting up a Tinkering lab. I shall write about tinkering lab in my next blog.
