The choice of Science or Commerce after Class X is a tough one. Both these courses lay the foundation on which a student’s future career is built, choosing the right path is vital.
Let us simplify both fields and let you be the judge.
Commerce course covers Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Computer Science, Mathematics (it is optional, but important for students to build a better base for higher studies like CA, CS, CMA, CFA etc)
In the science stream, one will have been studying various subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Electronic, and Computer Science. In India, we have Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects and one can choose either Biology, Computer Science or Electronics one as a 4th subject. If one chooses Biology then she can be in the career fields like Medical, Paramedical course, Biotechnology, Agricultural Sciences, Geology, Zoology, Forensic Science, Microbiology and Food Technology etc. If you choose Computer Science or Electronics, then they would land in Pure Science, Engineering and Technology field.
If choosing commerce, you need to be comfortable with calculations and number crunching i.e., good analytical skill. Time management is another attribute, completing the task within a specified time limit.
In Science, you have to be comfortable with math and science subjects. There will be longer periods of studies involved in colleges, and while in jobs for research. Hence, patience is very important for students to excel. Observing and determining the properties of an object by using your senses is an important aspect in Science.
The list of skills/attributes increases as one progresses in these above fields, but the above are the basic ones that students should have to start with.
Choose the one that matches your skills and the one which you feel you are passionate about. Commerce students cannot change to streams/courses related to Science after Class XII or PUC 2, while it is possible the other way round. Commerce is less stressful in terms of hours spent in colleges/studies, while science students spend more time if one takes into account the time spent on practicals and tuitions etc.
Both have excellent career prospects in terms of higher professional courses
Right now go for a choice which you feel is right for you at the moment, and remember this is not the end, but just the start.
